The Secret to Stop Hitting it Fat!

Posted on February 16, 2017

One of the worst feelings in golf is to hit the ball fat, chunky, laying the sod, taking a pork chop divot and some other words not meant for a family blog post:) The video the below shows a great drill on how to avoid this dreaded shot. If you are someone who does hit the ball fat your club head is hitting the ground well before the golf ball.

Sometimes called the Flamingo Drill or the Left Foot Right Toe Drill I like to use this drill with players struggling to find the bottom of the golf swing in the correct place. There are many reasons you might be hitting the ground behind the ball. Trying to get under the ball or lift the ball is a huge reason golfers hit it fat. Maybe too steep a swing (over the top) or to shallow a swing (under the plane or too much in to out). Incorrectly shifting your weight to your back foot in the downswing.

So what’s the cure you ask. In the video below, you will find one of my favorite drills to use to help golfers stop hitting it fat.

Setting up to the golf ball put all of your weight on your front leg and place your toe of your trail foot on the ground. You are pre-setting impact with your weight forward, hips and chest slight open and the handle forward or shaft leaning towards the target. This drill also helps move all of your weight to your front foot. You can use a half swing or full swing in this drill.

By pulling your trail foot behind you this creates a closed stance. A closed stance will generate a swing path a little more to the right which also is a slice buster. You are getting a lot of benefits my using this type of set up and drill. The club face will most likely close during the downswing to promote a draw. Weight forward, a slightly in to out path and a correct bottom to your golf swing will create a solid shot.

Golf is a journey and a passion of mine. I love golf instruction and teaching the game to all levels of golfers. Helping you the golfer or new golfer reach your goals is my main focus.

How can I help you the most? Do you desire longer driver, a better short game, holing more putts, shooting lower scores or just making solid contact? Do you need me to look at your golf equipment and make recommendations to fit your game. It’s so important to play with the correct golf clubs. Just a like a carpenter with their tools you need your clubs fitting your swing.

Thank you again for reading my blog post and I hope these golf tips really help your game! If you have found value in this post please go ahead and share on your social media channels to all of your friends!:)
